Journal Entry #5

Thesis statements: Plot

1. Hurston manipulates exposition to introduce ideas that are key to understand the theme and plot of the novel.

2. Hurston uses the internal conflict of Janie to portray through the plot the effect of key events throughout the novel. Hurston does this to express that the beginning of internal conflict can stem from ones self and to resolve it first look to ones self.

3 comments: I commented on Isabel Harger, Kylee Rosette and Anthony Nguyen's blog.

  1. I like your thesis but I think that you should also consider the parallel betwee the internal conflict inside Janie and the external conflict in the novel. What does Hurston suggest about the self through this?

  2. I think the idea of your thesis is sound, but I feel like the wording is a little disjointed. And, what exactly is the internal conflict that Janie is experiencing? But overall, marvelous job!

  3. Your thesis is a great idea, but the last little part ("to resolve it first look to ones self") is awkward to read aloud. I also agree with Kylee that the internal conflict should be specified. Otherwise, it's a good thesis.
